Chapter 14
The Trap is Sprung
Elias walks into a carefully laid trap, orchestrated by his pursuers. He must use all his resourcefulness to escape, realizing Stella's name is the bait.
The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of dust and decay, a familiar perfume to Elias. He moved through the cavernous space like a phantom, his boots crunching softly on the gritty floor. Each shadow was a potential hiding place, each creak of metal a possible alarm. The crumpled note, tucked deep within his jacket, felt like a burning ember against his skin. ‘The old cannery. Midnight. She’s here.’ It was a trap, of course. He knew it the moment his eyes landed on the familiar, looping script, a script he hadn't seen in years, a script that belonged to Stella.
He’d been so careful. For so long, he’d been a ghost, a whisper on the wind, leaving no trace, forging no connections. His life was a series of fleeting towns, anonymous faces, and jobs that asked for nothing but his hands and his silence. Always the sunglasses, always the cap pulled low, a shield against recognition, against the past that clung to him like a shroud. But the past, it seemed, had a way of finding its way back, especially when it wore the face of the one person he couldn't forget.
He reached the designated spot, a rusting conveyor belt snaking its way through the gloom. The silence here was different from the usual stillness of forgotten places. It was a watchful silence, pregnant with anticipation. He could feel eyes on him, unseen, unblinking. A prickle of unease traced its way up his spine, a familiar sensation that had kept him alive this long. Yet, the lure of Stella, or the ghost of her, was a powerful current, pulling him deeper into the darkness.
