Chapter 13
A Memory of Light
A vivid flashback transports Elias to a time when Stella was a source of joy, not sorrow. This memory fuels his determination to protect what she represented.
The air in the roadside diner hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and frying onions, a familiar perfume to Elias. He’d washed dishes in places like this, scrubbed grease traps, mended fences for a pittance, anything to keep moving, to keep the shadows at bay. Today, the shadows felt a little longer, a little more insistent. He nursed a lukewarm cup of coffee, the chipped ceramic cool against his calloused fingers. His gaze drifted to the window, to the relentless sun beating down on the cracked asphalt outside. It was a sun that offered no warmth, only a blinding glare that mirrored the haze in his own mind.
He reached into the inner pocket of his worn leather jacket, his fingers brushing against the smooth, cool surface of the photograph. Even in its faded state, her smile was a beacon. Stella. The name itself was a whisper on his tongue, a ghost in the wind that followed him. He traced the curve of her cheek with his thumb, a familiar ache blooming in his chest. This wasn't the first diner, nor the hundredth. Each one was a temporary harbor, a brief respite before the current pulled him onward, always onward. He was a man adrift, his past a locked chest, its contents known only to him and the darkness that pursued him.
The clatter of plates and the low murmur of conversations faded as Elias felt a shift, a subtle tremor that ran deeper than the rumbling of the ancient refrigerator behind the counter. It was a feeling he’d learned to recognize, a prickle on the back of his neck, the sudden stillness that precedes a storm. He didn’t need to look. He knew. They were closer than they had been. The cryptic message, slipped under his motel room door two days ago, had been clear enough. "The whispers are loud. Stella’s name is on their lips. Move." It had been a chilling confirmation of his deepest fears. The past, a beast he’d tried to outrun for years, was finally catching up.
