The air in the small, cluttered apartment hummed with a quiet tension, a palpable thing that had settled between Crow and me like a familiar, yet still unsettling, guest. Sunlight, usually a cheerful intrusion, felt muted today, filtered through the dusty panes of the window. It cast long, distorted shadows across the worn floorboards, mirroring the way our own truths had been twisted and reshaped by unseen hands. We sat opposite each other, the small table between us a chasm that felt both impossibly wide and terrifyingly narrow.
Crow’s braid, usually so neat, had a few strands escaping, framing a face etched with a weariness that mirrored my own. His purple eyes, the color of twilight, were fixed on me, searching, probing, as if trying to find an answer not just in my words, but in the very pores of my skin. He’d been quiet for a long time, a rarity for him, and the silence amplified the frantic beat of my own heart against my ribs.
"So," he finally began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in the stillness. "What do we do now?"
