Chapter 18
The Choice
They must decide: embrace their love, acknowledging its guided path, or reject it, haunted by the 'what ifs'.
The air in the small, cluttered room felt thick, heavy with unspoken questions and the phantom scent of ozone from the night before. My fingers traced the condensation on the glass of water beside my bed, each drop a tiny world reflecting my own fractured state. Crow was still asleep, his long brown braid a dark river against the pillow, his breathing a soft counterpoint to the frantic rhythm of my own heart. I watched him, a knot of something fierce and terrifying tightening in my chest. Was this real? Was he real?
The revelation from the anonymous letter, slipped beneath my door with unnerving stealth, still echoed in my mind. It was all a carefully constructed narrative, with us as the unwitting protagonists.
I’d spent the night dissecting it, my analytical mind a relentless machine, trying to find the flaw, the escape hatch, the proof that some of it, at least, had to be organic. But the letter was too precise, too damning. It spoke of "optimal conditions," "probability matrices," and "emotional resonance amplification." Words that stripped the poetry from our connection and replaced it with cold, hard data.
