Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Tjay tries to help a new group of students who seem to accept her gift, but their demands grow overwhelming. She has a vision of a dangerous situation involving one of them, and when she tries to warn them, they mock her. The chapter ends with Tjay witnessing a near-accident that forces her to act.
The vision of the crying girl haunted Tjay through the weekend. She saw her face in the dark of her bedroom, heard the sob that came just before she woke. The girl had short dark hair and a freckled nose. She wore a yellow shirt. Tjay had never seen her before.
Monday morning came gray and humid. Tjay walked to school with Emma, but her mind was elsewhere. She kept scanning faces, looking for the girl from her vision. None matched.
At lunch, a group of girls from the art club waved her over. They had always been polite but distant. Today they seemed eager to include her. Tjay hesitated, but Emma nudged her. "They're nice," Emma said. "Give them a chance."
