Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Tjay discovers a hidden box in the attic containing her mother's old journals, which reveal that her mother also had the same gift and tried to suppress it, leading to her grandmother's distrust. This secret explains her mother's coldness and deepens Tjay's understanding of her own gift, but also brings a heavy sense of inherited isolation.
The days after Jessica's accident stretched like a gray ribbon. Tjay moved through school like a ghost, her red hair a flare against the muted hallways. Emma stayed close, a steady presence, but even she couldn't fill the hollow that had grown in Tjay's chest.
At home, the silence was worse. Her mother moved around the kitchen, efficient and distant, her back a wall Tjay couldn't climb. The visions had come three times that week—a dog hit by a car, a boy falling from a tree, a woman crying in a white room. Tjay had told no one. What was the point? They saw what they wanted to see.
One Friday afternoon, after the last bell rang, Tjay walked home alone. Emma had a dentist appointment. The air smelled of rain not yet fallen. The house greeted her with its usual creaks and shadows.
