Chapter 8
Finding the Light
The world, once a riot of colour, had muted itself to shades of grey for Elara. Days bled into one another, a watercolour wash of routine and quietude. The faint bruise on her nose, a delicate violet bloom against her pale skin, was a constant, soft reminder. It was a secret she carried, not of shame, but of something too tender, too sharp, to voice aloud. She moved through her small apartment like a ghost, her footsteps barely disturbing the dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight that dared to intrude. The silence was her sanctuary, a thick blanket woven from the threads of her own making.
But lately, the silence had begun to fray. Little threads of memory, like errant strands of cobweb, caught on the edges of her awareness. A particular slant of light through the kitchen window, the scent of rain on dry earth, a snatch of a forgotten melody – they would surface, unbidden, like shy wildflowers pushing through concrete. They were fragments, fleeting and elusive, yet they stirred a disquiet within her, a faint tremor beneath the carefully constructed calm. She’d brush them away, like a restless sleeper swatting at a persistent fly, but they always returned, a whisper of what had been, a hint of what lay buried.
One afternoon, as she sat by the window, tracing the condensation patterns with a fingertip, a familiar dream began to unfold. It wasn’t a nightmare, not in the way of roaring monsters or chasing shadows. It was more a disorienting fog, a place where sounds were muffled and colours bled into one another. A scent, sharp and metallic, would always prickle at her senses, and a specific, low hum, like the vibration of a distant engine, would resonate deep within her bones. In this dreamscape, there was always a figure, indistinct, shrouded in the same grey mist that permeated the dream. Elara would reach out, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs, but the figure would always recede, just beyond her grasp. This time, however, as she reached, her hand brushed against something cool and smooth. A small, carved wooden bird, its wings outstretched as if in flight.
