The air in the abandoned observatory was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a fitting mausoleum for the secrets it held. Moonlight, fractured by the grimy glass of the dome, cast long, skeletal shadows across the deserted equipment. Hana clutched the small, tarnished locket in her hand, its cool metal a stark contrast to the frantic pulse thrumming beneath her skin. This was it. The locket, tucked away in the dusty corner of Akase’s old locker, the one Kenji had ‘forgotten’ to clean out. It wasn't just a locket; it was a miniature photograph, a faded snapshot of Akase with a boy Hana didn't recognize, his arm slung casually around her shoulders. And beneath the photo, etched into the metal, a single initial: ‘R’. Kenji’s full name was Kenji R. Sato. The pieces clicked into place with a sickening finality.

She had followed the breadcrumbs, the subtle inconsistencies in Kenji’s stories, the way her eyes always seemed to be scanning the room, cataloging exits and potential threats. The way she flinched at sudden noises, the almost imperceptible tightening of her jaw when Akase’s name was mentioned. Hana had dismissed it all initially, chalking it up to the awkwardness of a transfer student. But Akase’s death had been a raw wound, and Hana’s grief had sharpened her senses, turning her into a reluctant detective. She’d found the cryptic note tucked into Akase’s favorite book, a passage underlined with disturbing intensity: "The serpent coils, waiting for its moment." She’d noticed the same brand of expensive, imported cigarettes in Kenji’s discarded backpack that Akase had once complained about smelling on a boy who had bullied her. Small things, insignificant on their own, but woven together, they formed a tapestry of undeniable guilt.

The observatory had been Akase’s secret sanctuary, a place she’d dragged Hana to more than once, sharing whispered dreams and teenage angst under the vast expanse of the night sky. Hana had come here on a hunch, a desperate hope that Akase had left something, anything, that could confirm her suspicions. And she had found it. The locket, a tangible link to Akase’s last days, a silent accusation against the girl who now walked the halls of their school with a predator’s grace.
