Chapter 5
Echoes of Eleven
Sharin recalls her own eleventh year, still being tasked with Hectorn's care. The frustration of being treated as a perpetual caretaker, never allowed to be just a child herself, fuels her growing resentment.
Sharin remembered it like it was yesterday, though the calendar insisted it had been a whole year ago. She had been eleven, a tender age where scraped knees and whispered secrets in the dark were supposed to be the biggest worries. But for Sharin, eleven had been just another year of being the designated guardian of Hectorn. Her father’s booming voice, a constant, unyielding force in their small home, had echoed the same decree that year as it did every year: "Sharin, you are the elder. Hectorn is your responsibility. Make sure he doesn't get into trouble."
It wasn't a request; it was a command etched into the very fabric of their lives. And the trouble Hectorn could get into was usually of the most mundane, yet infuriating, variety. He’d wander off, forget his manners, or, most often, simply whine until Sharin’s own patience wore thinner than a threadbare blanket. She remembered the sting of her father’s words, delivered with a stern gaze that never wavered. "He's not a baby, Sharin," she'd protested, her voice cracking with the frustration of an eleven-year-old who felt robbed of her own childhood. "He can do things for himself!"
Her father had simply shaken his head, a dismissive gesture that spoke volumes. "You are older," he’d stated, as if that explained everything. As if being older automatically bestowed upon her the mantle of permanent caretaker, erasing her own needs, her own desires for play and freedom. It was a burden she had carried since Hectorn was a toddler, a weight that had settled on her young shoulders and refused to budge.
