Chapter 4
A Chase Begins
Pip, with a playful wiggle, darts out of the sarcophagus. Maya, her annoyance fading into curiosity, finds herself pursuing the speedy scarab through the dusty tomb.
The air in the sarcophagus, usually still and heavy with the scent of ancient dust and dried linen, stirred. A tiny, almost imperceptible breeze, carrying the faintest whisper of something… alive. Maya, or rather, the mummy that was Maya, felt it first as an annoying tickle, a phantom sensation against the linen wrappings that clung to her form. It wasn't the familiar, comforting stillness of her eternal rest; it was a disruption. An itch.
Her mummified fingers twitched. She tried to ignore it, to sink back into the deep, dreamless slumber that had been her companion for millennia. But the itch persisted, a tiny, insistent demand. Her eyes, still sealed beneath their linen bandages, felt a strange, phantom awareness, as if they too were trying to peer into the gloom.
The tickle intensified, focusing on a single spot near her ankle. It wasn’t a painful itch, nor was it the maddening crawl of decay. This was… playful. Mischievous. And utterly out of place in the solemn silence of her tomb. A wave of something akin to annoyance, a feeling she hadn't experienced since her mortal days, washed over her. Who dared to disturb her peace?
