Chapter 12
Guardians of the Tomb
Maya and Pip realize the importance of protecting the pharaoh's tomb. They decide to become its playful guardians, ensuring its treasures remain undisturbed.
The cool, quiet air of the pharaoh’s tomb had always been Maya’s sanctuary. For centuries, she had rested, a silent sentinel, her sarcophagus a velvet-lined cradle in the heart of this ancient, slumbering world. But today, a prickle, a persistent, maddening itch, disturbed her eternal peace. It began as a whisper, a tickle beneath her linen wrappings, but it grew, an insistent buzzing that vibrated through her very bones. Maya, the playful mummy, stirred. Her bandaged eyes fluttered open, the darkness of her tomb momentarily blinding. The itch intensified, a tiny, localized rebellion against her serene repose.

Moonlight, filtered through the cracks and crevices of the great pyramid, cast long, ethereal shadows across the chamber. It was then, illuminated by a lone beam of silver light, that she saw him.
A scarab beetle, no bigger than her thumb, scuttled across the silken lining of her sarcophagus. His shell gleamed with an iridescent, emerald hue, and his tiny legs moved with an almost comical urgency. He paused, antennae twitching, and Maya felt a faint, almost imperceptible vibration emanating from him. The itch. It was him.
