Chapter 24

Chapter 24: The Anchor's Echo

Kenny, now the Warden of the Cradle, adjusts to his new existence as a living anchor of cosmic balance. Weeks pass in solitude until he senses a faint, familiar resonance from across the galaxy—a fragmented call from his father, Alistair, trapped not in the Crystal Throne but in a hidden pocket dimension created by the splinter's last remnants. Using his new abilities, Kenny projects his consciousness to rescue Alistair's spirit, only to discover a greater danger: the splinter's master, an entity from before time, awakening in the void between dimensions.

The days blurred into an endless tapestry of starlight. Kenny sat at the heart of the Cradle, his body bathed in the golden luminescence of the merged Heart. He no longer needed sleep, food, or air. He simply existed, a silent sentinel watching the cosmic currents flow around him like rivers of eternity. The first week had been the hardest—the silence, the absence of Sona’s laughter, of Dreg’s grumbling, of Mera’s cheerful hum. But the Heart’s warmth filled the void, and with it came a clarity he had never known. He could feel every thread of existence, every whisper of energy that connected star to star, life to life. He was the axis upon which the universe turned.

Visitors came, as promised. On the tenth cycle, a sleek ship descended through the mist of the Cradle. Kenny stood from his crystalline perch as Sona stepped out, her face brightening at the sight of him. She ran and hugged him, and he felt her warmth, her heartbeat, her tears. They talked for hours about the crew’s adventures—Kranos’s negotiations with a trade syndicate on Neon-7, Mera’s victory in an asteroid racing tournament, Dreg’s awkward confession to Zari over a shared meal. Kenny laughed, and for a moment, he forgot the weight of his duty. But when she left, the silence returned, and he felt the loneliness more acutely than before.

The second visit came from Crane, who sat beside him without a word for a long time. Then the old hunter spoke, his voice rough with emotion. “You did what no one else could, kid. I’m proud of you.” Kenny thanked him, and they watched the stars together until Crane departed.
