The air in the school hall hummed with a nervous energy that felt thicker than the usual midday heat. It was the day of the Great Math Challenge, and our table felt like a tiny island in a sea of buzzing brains. Amina was meticulously arranging our pencils, each one sharpened to a perfect point, as if preparing for a duel. Mattia, bless his energetic soul, was bouncing his knee under the table, a sure sign that his usual exuberance was being confined by the sheer weight of the occasion. I, Abdul, felt a peculiar mix of excitement and a flutter of the old, familiar dread. What if we weren't as ready as we thought? What if the stories from Grandpa Fouad’s dusty book were just… stories?

Then, the first problem was announced. It was… well, it was a bit like trying to untangle a ball of yarn that had been played with by a very determined kitten. Numbers tumbled and twisted, and the question itself seemed to wear a grumpy frown. Amina’s brow furrowed, and Mattia’s knee-bouncing slowed to a worried tap. I stared at the paper, the neat rows of numbers blurring for a moment. This was nothing like the straightforward sums we’d practiced. This felt… tricky.

“Hmm,” Amina murmured, tapping her pen against her chin. “This isn’t just about adding and subtracting, is it?”
