Chapter 10
Episode 10
The air in the Petrova apartment, once thick with the scent of Anya’s imported rosewater and the faint, comforting aroma of her father’s pipe tobacco, now hung heavy with a desolate silence. Dust motes danced in the slivers of weak winter sun that dared to penetrate the drawn velvet curtains, illuminating the stillness where Anya’s vibrant presence used to be. Nickola sat opposite him, his broad shoulders slumped, the usual spark in his eyes replaced by a dull, gnawing ache. The triumphant roar of the crowd, the bouquets tossed onto the stage, the final, breathtaking bow – it all felt like a phantom limb, a memory that both soothed and tormented.

The manipulator, a man whose name they now whispered with a mixture of disgust and disbelief, had been apprehended, his intricate web of deceit and control unraveled. Justice, as the officers had called it, had been served. But for Dmitri and Nickola, the victory tasted more like ash than triumph.
“She’s sleeping,” Dmitri murmured, his voice rough from disuse. He hadn’t heard her speak more than a few words since they’d brought her home. The trauma had built a wall around her, and they were left on the outside, peering in, desperate to breach it.
