A Shadow's Envy
A rival vampire, consumed by envy, targets Katja. He desires her for himself, forcing Vladislaus to confront the darkness within his own nature and the painful memories of his past to protect his beloved muse.
The air in my studio had grown heavy, thick with a tension that had nothing to do with the turpentine fumes or the lingering scent of linseed oil. It was a palpable thing, a prickling on my skin, a whisper of danger that coiled in the corners of the room. Vladislaus, usually a steady, grounding presence, was taut, his gaze fixed on the window as if seeing something I could not. His hand, when it brushed mine, felt unnaturally cold, a stark contrast to the feverish heat that had begun to bloom in my chest.
"He watches," Vladislaus murmured, his voice a low rumble, barely audible above the city’s distant hum. His eyes, usually pools of ancient knowledge and tender longing, were now clouded with a familiar darkness, a shadow I had glimpsed before but never so intensely.
"Who watches?" I asked, my own voice trembling slightly. The patron, the vampire, the man who had woven himself into the very fabric of my dreams, was now a silhouette against the dying light, his presence a shield and yet, a beacon.
