Chapter 1: A Poem in Her Pocket

Bria, a young woman in Miami, Florida, hides her poetry from her strict father and dreams of finding someone who understands her love of words. After writing verses about spring in secret, her poem is almost discovered, forcing her to hide it quickly. She finds hope in a mysterious reply left in her favorite tree.

Bria flattened herself against the parlor window, the cool glass a stark contrast to the heat that bloomed in her chest. Rain lashed the garden, each drop a tiny fist against the bowed heads of daffodils. Their yellow heads drooped, not in sorrow, but in defiance of the house’s heavy rules. In her palm, a folded scrap of paper burned—her poem, penned in her most secret script.

“BRIA!” Her father’s voice, a thunderclap from the library, ripped through the quiet. “What are you doing by that window? There’s mending to be done.”

“Coming, Father,” Bria called, the paper a frantic bird against her ribs as she tucked it into her apron pocket. Her pulse hammered. If he discovered her clandestine verses, he’d call it foolishness, a waste of precious time better spent on needlepoint or proper books.

But the rhythm of words, the sudden spark of a perfect rhyme, made her entire being hum. Today’s offering, whispered to the drumming rain:

“Rain taps the earth, soft and shy,

Daffodils dance, yellow and spry,

Wishes are whispered in April’s breeze—

Beauty is found in moments like these.”

Stitching by the fire, her thoughts snagged on the garden again. The willow, its branches a curtain of green lace against the mist, was her sanctuary. Its hollow trunk, a secret vault for her most precious words. She yearned for a confidante, someone who understood the fierce joy that bloomed when words met seasons, when dreams took flight.

Later, chores were abandoned, Bria slipped into the damp air. Her shoes squelched through puddles, a frantic beat against the hush, until she reached the willow. Its ancient trunk, gnarled and wide, gaped open—a perfect hiding place for fragile hope. She slid her poem deep inside, a whispered plea: “Guard my words, please.”

A sharp crunch of boots shattered the quiet. Bria spun, heart leaping into her throat. Joyce, the gardener’s daughter, stood there, arms laden with sodden tulips. A wide grin split Joyce's face. “Hiding something, Miss Bria?”

Bria’s cheeks burned. She shook her head, a frantic denial. “Just… talking to the willow.”

“Papa says that the tree is magic,” Joyce said, a conspiratorial wink flashing before she trudged toward the house.

A shaky grin touched Bria’s lips. Magic. Perhaps. Perhaps this magic could carry her wish to someone who would hear.

That night, the house settling into a profound quiet, Bria crept back to the willow. Her fingers explored the hollow, seeking her hidden verses. Instead, they brushed against paper. Another slip. Her breath caught. With trembling hands, she unfolded it. In careful, elegant script, words bloomed in the darkness:

“Your poem is lovely as rain on spring leaves.

Write again. I will listen.”

A silent gasp escaped Bria. Someone had found her secret. In the vast, echoing silence, a kindred spirit had answered. Her heart thrummed with a dangerous, exhilarating hope.
