Bria hardly slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, the words from the willow tree fluttered in her mind, gentle as butterfly wings: "Write again. I will listen." She pressed the slip of paper to her heart, I'm wondering who could have written it. Was it someone from the village? Another girl, or perhaps a kindred spirit she hadn’t yet met? The thought made their cheeks warm with hope.

The next morning, Bria's chores felt lighter than ever. She dusted the parlor with a secret smile and folded laundry with a quiet hum. Joyce, passing through with a basket of clean carrots, noticed. “You’re awfully cheerful today, Miss Bria. Is spring tickling your toes?”

Bria laughed, spinning on her heel. “Maybe it is, Joyce. Or maybe the willow tree whispered something sweet.”

Joyce grinned. “If it did, you’d best whisper back!”

As soon as the house quieted after the luncheon, Bria hurried upstairs and pulled out her writing box. She chose a fresh scrap of paper, dipped her pen carefully, and wrote in her smallest, neatest letters:

“To the friend who found my spring song—

Do you love words, too?

Does your heart beat secret things,

For petals and rain and summer dew?

If you wish, answer the truth—

I long for a friend who understands me.”

She read it over, her heart pounding with hope and worry. What if her mystery friend never returned? Or worse, what if her father discovered her secret?

That afternoon, Bria feigned interest in a book by the window until the rain slowed to a soft drizzle. When no one watched, she slipped outside, darting past the kitchen garden and tiptoeing through the wet grass. The willow loomed, gentle as an old friend, its branches swaying with the breeze.

With careful fingers, Bria tucked her new poem deep inside the hollow. She lingered for a moment, touching the rough bark, whispering, “Please, willow, carry my wish.”

As she turned to leave, a robin landed nearby, cocking its head as if it, too, was waiting for an answer. Bria smiled, feeling braver than before.

Back inside, her father called from the library. “Bria, have you finished your mending?”

“Yes, Father,” she replied, steadying her breath.

He peered over his spectacles. “You must prepare for tomorrow. Mr. Williams and his mother are calling. Remember, pretty and such fancies have no place for proper tea.”

Bria's heart sank. Mr. Williams was polite but dull—he never noticed the way the sky turned pink at sunset or how the garden seemed to sigh after rain. She nodded, promising herself not to let worry cloud her hope.

That night, Bria peered out at the willow, its silhouette silver in the moonlight. Somewhere out there was her secret friend, reading her words in the hush of evening. She hugged her knees and whispered, “Please answer.”

Would her new poem find its way to the right heart? Would she discover her kindred spirit before anyone else found out?

Bria waited, hoping for budding like a rose, for another message among the leaves.
