Chapter 8
The Offering of Light
Instead of the impossible wish, I decided to offer a different gift. I gathered the gentlest, warmest light from the deepest heart of the Wonder Tree. I wove it into a small, glowing orb, infused with peace and quiet strength. I didn't present it as a grant, but as a shared moment, a silent offering of understanding. I placed it carefully on a low-hanging branch near where the visitor sat, then retreated to watch. It was a leap of faith, hoping they would see not what they asked for, but what they truly needed.
The air in the Wonder Tree hummed with a different kind of silence today. It wasn't the usual peaceful quiet, the gentle murmur of growing magic, but a tense stillness, a breath held before a storm. The wish, the one that had felt like a knot in my wings, still lay heavy in my thoughts. It was a whisper of impossibility, a plea that scraped against the very edges of what I understood. Elder Willow’s words, soft as moss and deep as roots, echoed in my mind: *“The heart of a wish, little Pip, is not always found in the words spoken.”*
I fluttered nervously, my wings catching on the sunbeams that slanted through the canopy. The visitor, the one who had brought this perplexing wish, sat beneath the ancient boughs, their form a study in quiet sorrow. They hadn't spoken since leaving their wish, the shimmering echo of it a faint, discordant note in the tree's usual symphony. Their shoulders were slumped, their gaze fixed on some unseen point beyond the rustling leaves. It wasn't just sadness that emanated from them, but a profound weariness, a sense that the world had pressed down too hard for too long.
My usual instinct was to find the corresponding wish-bud, to coax it open, to weave the magic and send it forth. But this wish… it was like trying to catch moonlight in a sieve. It spoke of bringing back what was lost, of mending what was irrevocably broken, of a sunrise in the deepest night. It was a wish for the impossible. And the more I tried to grasp it, the more it slipped through my tiny fingers, leaving behind only a residue of my own inadequacy. Doubt, that creeping vine, began to coil around my heart. Was I not strong enough? Was the Wonder Tree’s magic too small for such a vast despair?
