Chapter 4

Echoes from Elder Willow

Overwhelmed by the impossible wish, I sought the wisdom of Elder Willow. His ancient branches swayed, and his voice, a rustle of a thousand leaves, filled the clearing. He spoke not of 'how' but of 'why,' of the 'heart of a wish' and the true desires that lie beneath the surface. 'Not all wishes are for the hand to hold, Pip,' he murmured, 'but for the spirit to embrace.' His words were like riddles, leaving me more bewildered than before. The weight of the impossible wish pressed down on me, a heavy cloak woven from dew and doubt. My wings felt leaden, each beat a struggle against an unseen current of despair. I’d spent the morning flitting between the wish-buds, their gentle luminescence a stark contrast to the shadow that had fallen over my heart. The visitor’s request, whispered with such raw, aching hope, echoed in the hollows of the Wonder Tree, a discordant note in its usual symphony of dreams. They wanted the sun to stand still, just for one day. One. Single. Day. How could I, Pip, a humble fairy of the Wonder Tree, command the celestial dance of stars and sun? It was a wish that defied the very fabric of existence.

My usual diligence felt like a charade. Tending to the nascent wishes, coaxing the shyest buds to unfurl their shimmering potential, felt hollow when this one, this colossal, impossible thing, loomed so large. I’d tried, of course. But the sun, bless its fiery heart, paid no heed. It continued its relentless, beautiful journey across the sky, indifferent to the desperate plea of a small fairy and her visitor.

Frustration gnawed at me. Was I not good enough? Was this tree, this sacred place of dreams, failing? The thought was a cold serpent coiling in my gut. I needed guidance, a wisdom that transcended my own limited understanding. There was only one being in all the Wonder Tree who possessed such depth, whose existence was intertwined with every rustle of leaf, every sigh of wind. Elder Willow.
