Chapter 7
Dottie's Treat Temptation
The riddle from the hayride leads them to a bustling Spookyween market stall, overflowing with delicious-smelling treats. The clue itself is cleverly hidden, shaped like a gingerbread cookie decorated with green icing. Dottie's eyes widen, and his tail gives a hopeful thump. He loves cookies! He inches closer, his nose twitching, almost forgetting the mission. "Dottie, no!" Barnaby barks gently. Dottie shakes his head, remembering his detective duties, but the temptation of the cookie-clue is almost too much to bear. He has to use all his willpower not to take a bite.
The riddle from the haunted hayride had been a tricky one, full of cobwebs and cackles, but Russo’s sharp eyes had finally pieced it together. “It leads to the Spookyween market!” she’d yipped, her tail giving a little excited wiggle. Captain Zoomie, his grizzled eyebrows raised, had nodded sagely. “A wise deduction, young Russo. The market is always the heart of the Spookyween festivities. A perfect place for a leprechaun to hide a clue, or perhaps… something more.”
Now, the Spookyween market buzzed around them like an excited swarm of fireflies. Stalls overflowed with pumpkins carved into grinning jack-o'-lanterns, strings of orange and black lights draped from every awning, and the air was thick with the mingled scents of caramel apples, roasted nuts, and something wonderfully, undeniably sweet. Barnaby’s nose twitched, his tail giving a happy thump against his furry legs. He loved the market. He loved the sights, the sounds, and most of all, the smells.
“This way!” Barnaby barked, his voice a little muffled as he nudged his way through a throng of costumed villagers. Captain Zoomie followed, his stride steady, his eyes scanning the bustling scene with the practiced gaze of an old adventurer. Russo trotted beside him, her ears perked, her gaze darting from stall to stall, ever watchful.
