Chapter 6

The Squirrels' Sneaky Sabotage

As the puppies and Captain Zoomie board the hayride, with fake cobwebs and spooky sounds all around, Sly and his Sneaky Squirrels are lurking in the pumpkin patch. They try to create a diversion, knocking over a pile of gourds and chattering loudly, hoping to snatch the clue from the hay wagon. The commotion causes a moment of chaos, making Dottie jump. In the confusion, one of the squirrels lunges for the clue, but Russo, quick as a flash, snatches it away just in time, holding it tight while the squirrels scramble back into the shadows, thwarted but not defeated.

The rumble of the hay wagon vibrated through Baby Blue’s paws as he settled deeper into the scratchy straw. Fake cobwebs, spun with an alarming amount of glitter, tickled his nose, and the recorded cackles of witches echoed through the crisp October air. Russo, ever vigilant, sat beside him, his ears swiveling, taking in every rustle and creak. Dottie, meanwhile, was already half-asleep, occasionally twitching his nose at the scent of decaying leaves and something vaguely like pumpkin spice. Captain Zoomie, perched on the edge of the wagon, his weathered face a mask of amused patience, surveyed the scene.

Baby Blue puffed out his chest, trying to project an air of unflinching bravery. He was brave, of course. Mostly. But the way those shadows danced beyond the flickering lantern light made his tail give an involuntary little thump against the wood. He could feel Russo’s subtle shift beside him, a silent acknowledgment of the unease that always accompanied their investigations, especially with the leprechaun’s cryptic message still clutched in his paw.
