Chapter 12: The Weight of Truth
Sarah meets her ex-husband Jack at the motel, where he reveals he left her five years ago because he had cancer and wanted to protect her from watching him die. Now the cancer has returned as stage four, and he has come to tell her the truth before it's too late. Sarah returns to Liam, shaken, and they navigate the emotional fallout together.
The motel room smelled of stale coffee and regret. Sarah stood just inside the door, her coat still buttoned, her hands shoved deep into her pockets. Jack sat on the edge of the bed, his shoulders hunched, his hands clasped between his knees. The overhead light was harsh, casting deep shadows under his eyes.
"How long have you known?" Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"About the remission? About it coming back?" He rubbed his face with both hands. "Six months. I went for a routine scan, and there it was. Spots on my liver. On my lungs."
