Chapter 1: The Bell Between Worlds

Brother and sister orphans, Luka and Mira, live on the edge of the city, haunted by dreams of a war between two realms. On the anniversary of their grandparents’ deaths, a mysterious bell toll divides the sky, drawing the siblings to a place where memories and worlds blur. Their strange connection hints at destinies intertwined with the ancient conflict.

The damp chill of morning clung to the city stones, stretching into its alleys with the pale fingers of fog. Luka woke to silence, broken only by the soft shuffle of his sister’s footsteps across the creaking floorboards. Mira was already dressed, the strands of her dark hair braided tightly, a habit she never unlearned since winter began. They were orphans in name, but not in memory; their grandparents’ stories hung like lanterns throughout the tiny flat.

Today marked three years since the accident. The world, at least on their side of the city, paid little attention to such anniversaries. But for Luka and Mira, it was a day stitched into their bones—a day heavy with dreams that were not always their own. Each year, as the date approached, Luka’s sleep filled with strange visions: towers of shining crystal, armies marching beneath twin moons, voices calling him by names he did not know. Mira, too, woke with salt on her cheeks and the rustle of wings fading from her ears.

They met by the window, watching the city below stir awake. Vendors pulled carts into the square; a baker’s warm bread scent drifted up through the cracked glass. For breakfast, they shared a heel of bread and a story, as their grandmother would have done. “Last night, I saw the river of stars again,” Mira whispered, as if someone might overhear. “And you were there. But you were older. You called me by another name.”

Luka’s hands stilled around the mug of tea. “The dreams are back,” he said. “They feel more real than ever.”

Mira nodded. “Do you think they’re memories?”

He hesitated, the question hanging between them. The city clock chimed the hour. Somewhere distant, a second bell answered—a deep, resonant note that made the window glass tremble. They glanced at each other, wide-eyed.

“That’s not from here,” Luka said. The city bell was sharp, metallic—a warning. This one was warm, like the echo of their grandmother’s lullabies. Compelled, they pulled on their coats and slipped into the street.

Fog pressed against their faces as they crossed the bridge toward the old quarter. The bell tolled again, this time closer, rippling through the air and into Luka’s chest. Mira clutched his hand. As they moved through the quiet lanes, the world seemed to tilt. Buildings shimmered at the edge of vision. Shadows lengthened with every step.

The siblings stopped together in front of the old church, its doors hanging open as if waiting. Luka could not remember ever seeing them unlocked. Inside, colored light streamed through broken glass, scattering across the empty pews. At the altar stood a bell, not rusted and silent as they remembered, but gleaming and new. Its surface shone with faint symbols, half-remembered from the sketches their grandfather used to make.

Mira drew close. “I know this place,” she whispered. “From before.”

Luka reached out, fingers brushing the bell’s cool surface. Images surged in his mind: two kingdoms warring above and below, fire and water, night and day. A pair of lovers torn apart, reunited in battle. The sense of déjà vu overwhelmed him. He pulled back, heart pounding.

Outside, the city was unchanged, but Luka and Mira were not. They knew then that the dreams and memories were more than grief—they were a call. And somewhere beyond the fog, the world waited, breath held, for their next move.
