Chapter 2

Scars in the Light of the Bell

Luka and Mira explore the old church, discovering that the mysterious bell triggers visions and feelings from lives before their own. A stranger named Eryon appears, recognizing them, and hints that their destinies are bound to an ancient conflict between two worlds. The siblings are urged to make a choice, and as they leave the church, they realize their ordinary world is forever changed.

Light filtered through the fractured stained glass in shifting bands, dust swirling like motes of memory. Luka circled the altar, drawn by the bell’s quiet shimmer. He watched Mira trace her thumb over a faded symbol—a crescent cradling a small flame. A chill rippled down his arms, not of cold, but recognition. The memory wasn’t his, but it lived in his muscles, his breath.

He glanced at Mira. “Do you remember anything more?”

She shook her head, but her eyes lingered on the bell. “When I touched it, I felt… sadness. And hope. Like losing something, but getting it back another way.”

A faint vibration passed through the floorboards, almost too subtle to notice. Luka knelt and pressed his ear to the ancient wood. The bell did not ring out loud, yet a hum threaded through his bones, tugging at something hidden deep inside.

A soft cough startled them. From the shadowed aisle, a figure stepped forward—a man in a weathered coat, his face sharp and watchful, hair touched with silver. He looked at the siblings as if waking from a long dream.

“I didn’t expect to find you here so soon,” he said, his voice low, each word careful. "You always found your way back."

Luka stepped protectively in front of Mira. “Who are you?”

The man gave a measured smile. "Eryon. Once a guardian of the Threshold. Now, just a messenger.” He approached the bell, nodding as if confirming an old suspicion. "You must have questions."

Mira’s voice was steady, though her hand trembled. “We see things. Places that don’t exist here.”

Eryon studied them, eyes brightening with something like relief. “It’s begun, then. The two worlds stir. Every generation, the veil thins, and those bound to the Bell awaken.”

Luka frowned. “Are we meant to fight?”

Eryon’s gaze softened. “That choice is yours. But you carry old wounds—and strengths. The kingdoms war for dominion over humankind. You were once keys to peace and to war. You may be again.” He turned to Mira. “Your name, in the old tongue, meant ‘Promise.’ His meant ‘Return.’”

Mira drew closer. “Are we alone in this?”

Eryon shook his head. “Others remember pieces. Not all wish for peace.” He pressed a slip of folded paper into Luka’s hand. “If you wish to learn more, come at dusk to the river’s edge. But choose with care. The Bell does not forget.”

Outside, the city’s noise returned, but felt distant, as if muffled by the veil Eryon described. Luka unfolded the paper. A symbol was drawn in hurried ink: the same crescent and flame Mira had touched. Beneath, a single word—"Choose."

As they stepped into the street, Luka felt the air grow lighter, yet the world pressed closer, woven with threads invisible to all but them. Mira slipped her hand into his.

“We can’t go back, can we?” she whispered.

He shook his head, feeling the weight of the bell in his palm. Somewhere, two kingdoms watched and waited.

A warm wind carried the chimes of the city, mingling with a far-off, secret note—a sound only Luka and Mira seemed able to hear.
