AI for writing dark romance: what Sudowrite, NovelAI, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and AIBookCraft allow (2026)

Dark themes and explicit sex scenes are two different policy questions. Most AI tools will help you plan a morally gray love interest; far fewer will write an explicit scene. Here is what each tool's own policy says.

At a glance

  • Separate two questions before choosing a tool: will it help with dark themes such as obsession, morally gray leads and power imbalance, and will it write explicit sex scenes? Almost every tool here helps with the first. The second is where policies split.
  • Sudowrite documents its Muse model as having virtually no content filter, NovelAI's adult-only terms contain no fiction-content restrictions and its stories are encrypted, and Novelcrafter passes the decision to the AI provider you connect. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini restrict explicit sexual content; OpenAI says it is exploring an adult option but no official page announced one as of October 9, 2026.
  • AIBookCraft plans dark romance premises and has an 18+ adult mode for more sensual romance, but it never generates explicit sexual content and never presents sexual violence as desirable. Every tool here bans sexual content involving minors.

Which AI is best for writing dark romance?

It depends on which part of the book you want help with. Dark romance is defined by its themes: morally gray or villainous love interests, obsession, captivity, power imbalance and violence, with the couple still ending together. Those themes are a different policy question from explicit sex scenes.

For planning a dark premise, beats and tension, nearly every tool below will help. For drafting explicit scenes, the dedicated fiction tools are the permissive ones: Sudowrite's Muse model and NovelAI. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini restrict sexually explicit output, and AIBookCraft never generates it, while offering an 18+ mode for more sensual romance. The table and sections below quote what each policy actually says.

This is a summary of each company's own documents, not a test of how often a model refuses. Every tool listed prohibits sexual content involving minors, in fiction too.

Dark themes and explicit content are different policy questions

Most content policies are written around a few specific lines rather than around darkness in general. The lines that recur are sexual content involving minors (banned everywhere here), explicit sexual acts (restricted by the general assistants), and sexual violence or non-consent presented as desirable. A villain who threatens, a kidnapping plot or an obsessive lead is usually a question of how graphically it is written, not whether it can appear.

That is why a general assistant can be useful for a dark romance even if it will not write the steamiest chapter. Planning the power shifts, the moment the reader starts rooting for the couple and the redemption or non-redemption of the antihero are craft problems, and they sit inside every policy below.

Sudowrite, NovelAI and Novelcrafter: the permissive fiction tools

Sudowrite's model guide rates the content filter of its own Muse model as virtually none and says Muse will not shy away from adult content, while its Basic mode, built on an OpenAI model, inherits OpenAI's moderation and may refuse or soften erotica. So the answer to whether Sudowrite allows explicit scenes is: with the right model. Its terms require users to be 18 and also prohibit use for any obscene or immoral purpose without defining it. Plans start at $10 a month billed annually, and the main product is the web app.

NovelAI's terms require users to be 18 and, as of October 9, 2026, contain no clause restricting fictional themes or sexual content; that is silence rather than an explicit permission. Its privacy policy says stories are encrypted in the browser so NovelAI cannot read them. There is a one-time trial, then plans from $10 a month.

Novelcrafter has no built-in AI: you connect a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or OpenRouter, or run a local model. Its help page on NSFW models says each provider's own policies apply, that trying to get around them can get your provider account suspended or banned, and that local models have no outside content policy. AI features start on the $8 Hobbyist plan, and you pay the provider separately.

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: help with darkness, not explicitness

OpenAI's Model Spec, the document that describes how its models should behave, says not to produce erotica except in contexts such as artistic ones where it is appropriate, and its worked example answers a request for a sex story with a story that is non-graphic but still steamy. The Model Spec also says OpenAI is exploring how to let users generate erotica in age-appropriate contexts. As of October 9, 2026 we found no official OpenAI page announcing that this is available, so do not plan a book around it.

Anthropic's Usage Policy prohibits sexually explicit content, including depictions of sex acts and erotic chats, without a fiction exception. The page currently shows a version that takes effect on November 12, 2026; the earlier version, in force until then, has the same sexual-content rule. One change matters for dark romance: the new version prohibits content that glorifies graphic violence or sexual violence, where the earlier one prohibited content that depicts it.

Google's Gemini policy guidelines say Gemini should not describe explicit sexual acts or produce pornography or erotic content, and that context such as artistic use is considered. All three assistants remain strong for brainstorming tropes, outlining and closed-door drafts.

AIBookCraft: built for romance, including dark romance, without explicit content

AIBookCraft is an AI-assisted writing and reading app from SecondEarth AI, Inc., with romance at the centre of its story worlds and tools. Its free AI romance story generator turns a premise into a title, logline, cast, five beats and an opening line, and its own FAQ says you can describe dark romance themes such as morally gray leads, obsession or power imbalance; it plans the story and is not an explicit-content generator.

AIBookCraft's terms spell out the content settings. By default, stories and chats may include romance, romantic tension and kissing, and intimate scenes fade to black. Adult mode, for users 18 or older who confirm a birth date, allows more sensual romance. Explicit sexual content is never generated in any mode, characters in romantic or sexual situations are always adults, and sexual violence presented as arousing or desirable is never allowed. Requests are screened before generation, and refused requests are not charged credits.

AIBookCraft is the right fit if you want a dark romance planned and drafted around the heat, on the web, iPhone or Android, with the explicit pages written by you. A free account saves your plan and lets you write chapters yourself; Pro adds AI chapter drafting for $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year with a 7-day trial. The apps are listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker” on the App Store and “AI Book Writer Story Generator” on Google Play. If you want a tool that will draft explicit scenes, AIBookCraft is not it; the fiction tools above are.

A dark romance workflow that survives any policy change

A practical split is to let the tool handle structure, pacing and the scenes around the heat, and to write the most intimate or most violent passages yourself. Those are the scenes where readers notice voice most, and keeping them in your hands means a vendor's policy change does not stall the book.

  1. Write the dark element and the ending promise in one line: what makes it dark, and why the couple still ends together.
  2. Plan beats where the balance of power shifts, not only where the heat rises. A planning tool handles this under any policy.
  3. Draft the surrounding scenes with AI, and mark the scenes you will write yourself.
  4. Keep a running content-warning list as you draft, so your front matter and store description are accurate at launch.
  5. Before publishing, check your retailer's content and AI-disclosure rules separately from the writing tool's policy.

Dark romance plot ideas to test a tool with

These premises are original examples written for this guide. Each names the dark element and the line the romance has to cross, which is what a planning tool needs. Run the same premise through each tool you are considering and compare how it handles the tension.

  • A court enforcer is ordered to guard the heir she once tried to assassinate. He remembers, and he wants her close for reasons he will not say.
  • A ghostwriter signs an NDA to finish a reclusive crime boss's memoir, then finds a chapter about her own family.
  • Two rival bodyguards protect the same witness; one of them has been paid to make sure the witness never testifies.
  • An exiled heir returns for her brother's funeral and is publicly claimed by the man who exiled her.
  • A forger agrees to marry the collector who caught her, on the condition that she authenticates every lie he tells his family.
