What AI Dungeon still does better

AI Dungeon's free tier is unusually generous: its help centre says all free players can play unlimited, for free, and the App Store listing says there are no ads. Paid memberships add more context, a larger memory bank and credits; they start at $14.99 a month for Journey.

The safety setting has three levels, and Mature requires confirming you are 18 or older. NovelAI: private text adventures for adults

NovelAI has a Text Adventure mode with Do and Say inputs and premade adventure scenarios, inside an editor built for co-writing long stories. Its privacy policy says stories are encrypted with a key derived from your password, so the company cannot read them; the flip side is that a lost password cannot be recovered.

There is no free plan: a one-time trial includes 50 text generations, then subscriptions run from $10 (Tablet) to $25 (Opus) a month, with unlimited text on paid tiers. NovelAI's FAQ points phone users to the mobile browser and an installable web app rather than a store app, and its terms require users to be 18 or older.

Character.AI: characters first, plot second

Character.AI is built around chatting with characters that other users create, and messaging is unlimited on the free plan, which shows ads. A cheaper c.ai lite plan ($4.99 a month in the US, varying by region) removes banner ads and adds daily premium chats; c.ai+ is listed at $9.99 on the US App Store.

For players under 18 the experience changed in late 2025: Character.AI began removing open-ended chat for US under-18 users on November 24, 2025, and launched Stories, a guided, multi-path format where you pick two or three characters, a genre and a premise. If you want a plot with a beginning and an end, Stories or a story-first app fits better than open chat.

Talefy: illustrated branching stories

Talefy describes itself as a place to read and play AI interactive stories with choices and branching paths, or to create your own with characters, a setting and a rating. Its homepage FAQ says prices start from $1.99, and its iOS app sells premium plans and Taley packs. Talefy's terms do not authorise users under 18. We could not find an official Google Play listing on October 9, 2026.

AIBookCraft: guided romance and fantasy story worlds

AIBookCraft is an AI writing and reading app from SecondEarth AI, Inc. Its Interactive Stories put you inside a ready-made story world: you read the premise and the world's rules, choose who you will be, and then choose what happens next, one scene at a time. The catalog is organised around romance, fantasy, werewolves, academies and another-life stories, with mysteries alongside.

AIBookCraft is a good AI Dungeon alternative if you want structure instead of a blank prompt. Each world comes with roles and rules, the first scenes are free to play, and each story is saved privately to your account. New scenes use credits from a daily allowance or from packs bought in the app, and those packs work on the web with the same account. The apps are listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker” on the App Store and “AI Book Writer Story Generator” on Google Play.

AIBookCraft's content settings are written for romance readers. By default stories may include romantic tension and kissing, and intimate scenes fade to black. Adult mode, for users 18 or older who confirm a birth date, allows more sensual romance, but explicit sexual content is never generated in any mode, and characters in romantic situations are always adults. If you searched for interactive romance stories, many results are choice games such as Choices: Stories You Play, where you read chapter by chapter and pick between branches that writers scripted in advance. They are free to start, with in-app purchases for premium choices and chapters, and the story, art and endings are fixed.

AI interactive stories generate each new scene from your choice, so the story can go somewhere no one scripted. The trade-off is consistency: an AI can forget a detail or drift in tone, which is why the set-up of the story world and the content settings matter more than in an authored game.

How to test an AI Dungeon alternative in 15 minutes

Feature lists look alike, so test the thing you care about: whether the story still makes sense ten turns in. Use the same premise in every app and stop at the same point.

1. Pick one premise you would genuinely play, for example a rival you must work with for one night.
2. Play ten turns. Make at least one choice the story did not suggest, if the app lets you type your own action.
