AI choose your own adventure: apps, a ChatGPT prompt and what to expect (2026)

You can play an AI choose your own adventure story in a dedicated app or in any chatbot. The difference is who keeps track of the story: the app, or you. Here is how each option works, a prompt you can copy, and where AI branching still breaks.

At a glance

  • An AI choose your own adventure story writes each scene from your last choice, so the plot is never fixed in advance. You can play one in three ways: an app that offers choices at each step (Story AI: Pick Your Path, Talefy, AIBookCraft's Interactive Stories), an open text adventure where you type any action (AI Dungeon), or a general chatbot such as ChatGPT with a prompt that sets the rules.
  • Apps keep the world, your role and the save file for you. A chatbot is the most flexible and costs nothing extra if you already use it, but you have to restate the rules when the story drifts.
  • The honest trade-off: hand-written choice games such as Choices: Stories You Play are more consistent, because every branch was written in advance. AI stories are more open but can forget names and promises after many turns.

What is an AI choose your own adventure story?

It is an interactive story in which an AI writes the next scene from the choice you just made. In a classic gamebook or a game like Choices, every branch was written in advance and you pick between them. With AI, the branch is generated on the spot, so you can usually go somewhere the author never planned, and the story does not run out of pages.

That freedom has a cost. Nothing guarantees that the AI remembers what happened twenty turns ago, so the best AI adventures are the ones that keep the world rules, your role and the story so far in view, either because the app stores them or because you put them in the prompt.

AI choose your own adventure apps where you are the main character

Story AI: Pick Your Path calls itself an AI-driven interactive fiction platform where you are the protagonist. On October 20, 2026 it was a small Android-only app (100+ downloads on Google Play) with ads, and we found no iPhone version.

Talefy offers branching AI stories and roleplay with characters that react to you. Its iPhone app is rated 18+ on the US App Store and sells in-app purchases; we did not find it on Google Play.

AI Dungeon is the open-ended choice: instead of picking from a list, you type what you do or say. Its help centre describes Do, Say and Story actions, and free play is unlimited. It is the best fit if you find preset options too narrow.

AIBookCraft's Interactive Stories put you inside a ready-made romance, fantasy or mystery world: you read the premise and the rules, pick who you are, then choose what happens one scene at a time. The first scenes are free; new scenes use credits from a daily allowance or packs bought in the app, which also work on the web. By default intimate scenes fade to black, and an 18+ adult mode allows more sensual romance but never explicit content. The apps are listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker” on the App Store and “AI Book Writer Story Generator” on Google Play. AIBookCraft is weaker on open-ended freedom than AI Dungeon, and its catalog is much smaller.

A ChatGPT choose your own adventure prompt you can copy

If you would rather use a chatbot, give it the rules up front. This prompt asks for short scenes, three choices plus a free option, and a small state block so you can check what it remembers. Change the bracketed parts.

Choose your own adventure prompt
Run a choose-your-own-adventure story with me as the main character.
Setting: [a sleeper train crossing the mountains at night]. Genre and tone: [romantic mystery, slow and tense]. My character: [name, one strength, one secret].
Rules: write each scene in 150 to 250 words in second person. End every scene with three numbered choices that lead to genuinely different outcomes, plus a fourth line: "Or type your own action." Never decide what I do or feel. Keep the world's rules consistent. Some choices should have costs.
After each scene, add a short block titled STATE with: location, people present, what my character knows, promises made, and items carried.
If I type RECAP, summarise the story so far in five lines. Start with the opening scene.

Where a chatbot adventure goes wrong, and how to fix it

Long chats drift. A name changes, a locked door opens without a key, or the AI starts choosing for you. The STATE block in the prompt makes drift visible: when it is wrong, correct it in one line before you choose.

ChatGPT's memory feature saves facts about you across chats, and Projects keep chats and files together, but neither is a save file for a story. If you play over several days, paste the last RECAP and STATE into a new chat with the original rules rather than relying on memory.

  • Restate the rules every 20 to 30 turns, or when the AI starts deciding for you.
  • Ask for choices with different outcomes, not three ways of doing the same thing.
  • Keep your own one-line log of big decisions; it is the fastest way to recover a broken thread.
  • If you want the app to hold the world and the save for you, use a choice-based app instead.

AI choose your own adventure or a hand-written choice game?

Choose a hand-written game such as Choices: Stories You Play when you want polished art, a clear ending and branches that never contradict each other. Choose an AI adventure when you want to go off the map, play a premise nobody has written yet, or keep going after the ending. Many players use both: authored games for a finished story, AI for a story that does not exist yet.

How to test an AI adventure app in 10 minutes

Use the same premise everywhere and stop at the same point, so the comparison is fair.

  1. Start one premise you would really play, such as a rival you must trust for one night.
  2. Play ten choices. At least once, type an action that was not on the list, if the app allows it.
  3. At choice ten, check three facts from the start: a name, a promise and a world rule.
  4. Close and reopen the app, then try a second device if it offers one account across devices.
  5. Find out what the next scene costs once the free part runs out, and read the content settings before you rely on them.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT do a choose your own adventure story?

Yes. Give it the setting, your character and rules such as three numbered choices per scene and never deciding for you. It works well for a session, but over many turns it can forget details, so ask for a short state summary after each scene.

Is there a free AI choose your own adventure app?

AI Dungeon offers unlimited free play, Story AI: Pick Your Path is free with ads on Android, and AIBookCraft lets you play the first scenes of each story world free with a daily credit allowance after that.

What is the difference between AI Dungeon and a choose your own adventure app?

AI Dungeon is open-ended: you type any action and the AI continues. Choice-based apps give you a few options at each step, which is easier to play on a phone and keeps the story on rails, but limits where you can go.

Are AI choose your own adventure stories safe for teens?

Check each app's store age rating and content settings. On October 20, 2026 AI Dungeon was rated 13+ on the US App Store, Talefy 18+, and AIBookCraft 16+ with adult mode limited to verified 18+ users.

Can I turn an AI adventure into a book?

You can use one as raw material, but a playthrough reads like a game log. Rewrite it in scenes with a clear arc. In AIBookCraft, a story world that sparks an idea can become your own story plan and manuscript.
