The air, thick and cloying, clung to my skin like a second, unwelcome shroud. Every breath was a struggle, a shallow gasp that did little to fill the hollowness in my chest. The rustling of unseen things in the undergrowth, once a sound that sent shivers of primal fear down my spine, had become a constant, low hum beneath my awareness. I was still alive. He was lean, his face a roadmap of harsh lines etched by sun and something else… something colder. His eyes, when they flicked up to meet mine, were the color of a stormy sea, sharp and assessing. There was no warmth in them, only a calculating glint.
