The shimmering curtain of light pulsed, beckoning me forward. Elara’s words, a desperate plea laced with the scent of ozone and fear, echoed in the hollow space where my memories used to reside. “Go, Jackson! Now! Don’t look back!” Her hand, warm and strong, pushed me, her eyes blazing with a fierce, heartbreaking resolve. I stumbled, my worn boots catching on the jagged, crystalline floor of the chamber. The portal, a swirling vortex of amethyst and emerald, hummed with an energy that vibrated deep within my bones, a song of departure, a promise of elsewhere.

I hesitated, my gaze snagged on Elara’s silhouette against the blinding light. She stood her ground, a lone sentinel against the encroaching darkness that was still clawing at the edges of this sanctuary. Silas, a snarl twisting his face, was already closing in, his eyes glinting with a predatory hunger that had nothing to do with sustenance. He wouldn’t let me escape, not without a fight. Not without taking something from me.

But Elara… Elara was the fight. Her sacrifice, a silent, terrible understanding, was the key. I couldn’t waste it. I couldn’t let her valiant stand be in vain. With a choked sob, a sound ripped from the rawest part of my being, I plunged into the light.
