The air tasted like old iron and something else… something sweet and decaying. Elara’s hand, surprisingly strong for its gauntness, gripped my arm like a vise. Her breath hitched, a ragged sound that tore through the oppressive silence of the cavern. “Go, Jackson. Now.”
I looked at her, really looked at her. The lines etched around her eyes weren’t just from weariness; they were scars, deep and ancient, from battles I couldn’t even imagine. Her normally sharp, intelligent gaze was clouded with a fierce, protective desperation. Behind her, a guttural roar echoed, a sound that vibrated in my bones, promising teeth and claws and a swift, brutal end. The Guardian. It was closer than I’d ever felt it.
“I can’t leave you,” I stammered, the words catching in my throat. The journal, its pages clutched tight in my other hand, felt like a lead weight. It spoke of escape, of a path through the heart of Z-Land, a path that led *here*. To this place, this final confrontation. And Elara, who had been my guide, my confidante, my only real anchor in this nightmare, was standing between me and… whatever that was.
