The air in the cavern still hummed with the frantic energy of our escape. Elara’s words, sharp and clear, echoed in my mind: “Silas is too eager. He wants something, Jackson. Something he won’t tell us.” I’d brushed it off, clinging to the fragile hope that we were finally on the same side, that Silas, too, understood the desperate need to leave this cursed place. The tunnel opened into a vast cavern, the ceiling lost in an inky blackness, punctuated by the eerie glow of the fungi. A shallow, sluggish river snaked through the center, its surface disturbed by unseen currents. On the far side, a faint, shimmering portal pulsed, a sight that made my heart leap into my throat. “There,” Silas breathed, his voice a low rumble of triumph. “The way out.”
