The air in the makeshift shelter, a hollowed-out giant mushroom cap, hung thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and faintly sweet that always made my gut twist. Elara was humming a low, tuneless melody, her fingers deftly weaving strips of tough vine into a snare. I watched her, my own fingers tracing the rough, familiar patterns on the cracked leather cover of the journal. It had become my constant companion, a silent oracle in this land of screaming silence.

A sudden jolt, like a phantom punch to the gut, sent a wave of dizziness washing over me. The mushroom cap wavered, the flickering glow of the bioluminescent moss on its walls seemed to pulse erratically. My breath hitched. It was happening again. These… *flashes*. They weren't like dreams, not quite. They were more like sudden, violent intrusions, shards of a life I couldn’t grasp, but that felt undeniably *mine*.

This time, it was a splash of blinding white light, followed by a cacophony of sounds: a high-pitched giggle, the rhythmic thud of something heavy, and a woman’s voice, sharp with panic. Then, a feeling – a dizzying ascent, a sense of being held aloft, followed by a terrifying drop. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to anchor myself in the present, in the familiar musty smell of the mushroom.
