The air in the cavern still thrummed with the aftermath of Elara’s magic, a vibrant hum that settled deep in her bones. It was a sensation so foreign, so welcome, after months of grasping at emptiness. Beside her, Leo, ever the pragmatist, was already examining the scorch marks on the cavern wall, his brow furrowed with a mixture of relief and lingering concern. Finn, his usual exuberance somewhat subdued by the sheer, terrifying power they had just witnessed, bounced on the balls of his feet, his eyes wide with awe.

Before them, the immense form of the Elder Dragon shifted, its obsidian scales catching the faint light filtering from unseen fissures above. The raw power that had radiated from it moments before had receded, leaving behind an almost palpable weariness. The air, thick with the scent of ozone and ancient stone, seemed to hold its breath.

Elara, her heart still pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs, took a tentative step forward. Her gaze met the dragon’s, a vast, intelligent emerald gaze that seemed to hold the weight of centuries. She saw not malice, but a profound sorrow, a deep-seated weariness that mirrored the ancient mountains around them. The resentment that had blazed in its eyes moments ago had softened, replaced by a flicker of something akin to curiosity, and perhaps, a grudging respect.
