Chapter 4
The Hermit of Whispering Caves
They encounter a reclusive hermit who reveals the Sunstone is guarded by ancient, powerful dragons, weary and resentful of the outside world.
The air in the Dragon Peaks tasted of jagged rock and the thin, sharp scent of pine. Elara pulled her cloak tighter, the rough wool a familiar comfort against the chill that had nothing to do with the wind. It had been days since they’d left the relative safety of the lower valleys, and the landscape had steadily grown more severe, more unforgiving. Leo, ever practical, navigated with a weathered map, his brow furrowed in concentration, while Finn, his usual ebullience somewhat muted by the sheer, imposing grandeur of the mountains, kept a lookout, his eyes scanning the impossibly high peaks that scraped the bruised, twilight sky.
Elara, however, felt a different kind of unease prickling at her skin. It wasn't just the looming threat of dragons or the unknown dangers of the Sunstone, but a more insidious worry that clung to her like the mountain mist. Her magic, the vibrant, humming current that had once been as natural to her as breathing, now felt like a shy guest, present but hesitant. She could feel its warmth, a faint ember where a bonfire had once blazed, but the fear of it flickering out, leaving her as powerless as she had been before, was a constant, gnawing companion.
"Are you sure this is the way, Leo?" Finn’s voice, though trying for its usual cheerfulness, held a tremor. "It feels like we're just walking into a particularly grumpy rock."
