The air itself seemed to hum with a disquieting energy, a low thrum that vibrated in Elara’s bones and settled like a cold weight in the pit of her stomach. She looked out from the highest parapet of the Citadel, the same parapet she’d stood on countless times before, but now, the familiar vista of their realm was marred. A creeping shadow, not of clouds, but of something far more sinister, bled across the horizon. It was a bruise against the azure sky, a slow, inexorable stain that seemed to suck the very vibrancy from the land.

“It’s here, isn’t it?” Leo’s voice was quiet, a rare stillness in his usual cheerful cadence. He stood beside her, his hand resting lightly on her shoulder, a silent anchor.

Finn, ever the optimist, tried to inject a note of bravado. “We’re ready, though! We have the Sunstone!” He gestured to the pouch hanging at Elara’s hip, the object within pulsing with a gentle, reassuring light that seemed to push back against the encroaching gloom. The Sunstone, a gift from the ancient dragons, felt like a piece of captured dawn, its warmth a stark contrast to the chill that was beginning to seep into the world.
