The air in the mountain pass grew thin and sharp, biting at Elara’s exposed skin. Beside her, Leo adjusted the worn leather strap of his satchel, his brow furrowed in concentration as he studied a crudely drawn map. Finn, ever the picture of boundless energy, bounced on the balls of his feet, scanning the jagged peaks that loomed around them like the teeth of some colossal, slumbering beast. The Sunstone was within reach, the hermit’s cryptic words still echoing in Elara’s mind, but the path ahead was anything but clear. The direct route, the one marked on most maps, was supposedly riddled with unstable rockfalls and treacherous crevasses, a gauntlet that had claimed many a hopeful traveler.
“This way,” Leo announced, tapping a section of the map with a calloused finger. His voice, though quiet, cut through the whistling wind. It wasn’t a magical pronouncement, no surge of arcane energy, just a simple, practical observation. “The hermit mentioned a ‘serpent’s spine’ that offered a quicker passage, but only if one knew where to look. I believe this is it.”
Finn cranled his neck, his eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. “A serpent’s spine? Sounds… slithery.”
