Chapter 12
Seraphina's True Colors
Seraphina's allegiance is tested. She reveals her personal stake in the technology, forcing Kael to question if she's a savior or another manipulator.
The sterile white of the anonymous safe house felt like a physical manifestation of Kael’s own internal landscape, a stark, unyielding space where thoughts echoed and anxieties amplified. He traced the faint outline of the Star of David embedded beneath his skin, a phantom itch that had become a constant companion. Seraphina, a creature of shadows and contradictions, watched him from across the room, her gaze a cool, appraising tide. The air between them crackled with unspoken tensions, the residue of their recent, desperate flight.
“You’re restless,” she stated, her voice a low hum that cut through the silence. It wasn’t a question, but an observation, laced with a familiar, unnerving acuity.
Kael flinched, his hand instinctively covering the spot on his spine. “Wouldn’t you be? We just escaped what felt like the end of the world, and now we’re holed up in a place that smells faintly of disinfectant and despair.” He forced a laugh, a brittle sound that did little to dispel the unease coiling in his gut. “Besides, this thing,” he tapped his spine again, “it’s a constant reminder.”
