The city, a labyrinth of shadowed alleys and gas-lit thoroughfares, had become my hunting ground, and the ancient book, my elusive prey. Each turn of its brittle pages had etched itself onto my soul, a map of forgotten words and half-formed melodies. But the deeper I delved, the more I felt a prickling sensation, a low hum beneath the surface of my skin that spoke not of discovery, but of being discovered. It was an ancient fear, one that clung to the scent of old paper and the metallic tang of rain on cobblestones.

I’d first noticed the subtle shift a few days prior, after my clandestine visit to Silas’s dusty archives. A persistent feeling of being observed, the phantom weight of unseen eyes following my solitary wanderings. Initially, I’d dismissed it as the paranoia of a mind steeped in arcane lore, a natural byproduct of wrestling with secrets best left undisturbed. Yet, the feeling persisted, growing in intensity like a gathering storm. It manifested in the way shadows seemed to deepen unnaturally at my approach, in the sudden cessation of distant chatter as I passed, in the fleeting glimpse of a figure disappearing around a corner just as I’d turned my head.

My poetry, once a quiet murmur in the echoing chambers of my mind, had begun to thrum with an urgent, almost desperate energy. The words, once fluid and yielding, now felt like sharp stones I was forced to chip from a reluctant quarry. The book, this silent oracle, demanded more than passive contemplation; it demanded a vigilance I hadn't anticipated.
