Chapter 9
Awakening the Wraith
Desperate, the Warden triggers an unknown wraith suit function. A surge of energy allows him to phase, a temporary, powerful escape.
The air crackled, not with the usual hum of the settlement’s generators, but with a raw, malevolent energy that promised oblivion. The Warden stood at the forefront, a solitary bulwark against the encroaching storm of steel and plasma. The mercenaries’ latest assault wasn't a brute-force charge; it was a symphony of calculated destruction, each weapon precisely calibrated to shatter defenses, to bypass the very essence of protection. He’d parried plasma lances with his mace, deflected kinetic rounds with unseen forces from his trench coat, and even mended the fractured plating of a desperate defender with a touch of his cybernetic hand. But this… this was different.
A searing beam, unlike any he’d encountered, sliced through the reinforced barricades as if they were spun sugar. It left behind a shimmering, ephemeral scar, a wound in reality itself. Panic, a sensation he usually kept locked away, began to seep into the defenders’ cries. The Elder, his face etched with a despair that mirrored the encroaching darkness, clutched the Warden’s arm. “They’ve found it,” the Elder whispered, his voice raspy with fear. “The Cascade Weapon. It… it unravels everything.”
The Warden’s enhanced eyes, normally sharp and analytical, flared with a new urgency. He’d noted the weapon’s trajectory, its energy signature a chaotic, dissonant chord against the otherwise predictable symphony of war. Conventional shielding was useless. His own wraith suit’s countermeasures, designed to deflect directed energy and disrupt tracking systems, flickered and died against its onslaught. He felt the very fabric of his augmentations strain, a phantom ache resonating through his metallic bones.
