The air crackled, not with the usual static of an approaching storm, but with a raw, untamed energy that vibrated deep within the Warden’s cybernetic bones. Dust, kicked up by the frantic scramble of villagers, swirled around his boots, coating the polished chrome of his legs in a fine, gritty film. He stood at the edge of the settlement, a bulwark against the encroaching darkness, his Mace of Wonder held steady, its arcane runes glowing with a soft, reassuring light. The twin neon chrome laser guns, sleek and silent at his hips, felt like an extension of his will, a promise of swift, precise justice.

Across the scarred earth, the mercenary vanguard advanced. Their armor was a brutalist symphony of sharp angles and reinforced plating, their weapons spitting arcs of plasma that seared the very ground. The Warden had anticipated their ferocity, their relentless technological edge. He had learned to anticipate. But this… this felt different. A low hum, almost imperceptible at first, began to rise from their ranks, a dissonant chord that prickled the hairs on the back of his neck.

“Warden!” The voice of Elder Maeve, strained and urgent, cut through the rising din. She stood near the settlement’s humble central plaza, her wrinkled face etched with a fear he had sworn to alleviate. “They’re… they’re doing something. The ground is shaking.”
