The air in the chamber thrummed with an energy that was both ancient and terrifying. It pulsed from the crystalline heart of the planet, a contained inferno that had drawn the mercenary wolves to this quiet corner of the galaxy. The Warden stood at its precipice, the hum vibrating through the soles of his boots, up through his cybernetic legs, and into the very core of his being. Before him, the Settlement Elder wrung their hands, their face a mask of weary desperation.

“You see now, Warden,” the Elder’s voice was raspy, a dry leaf skittering across stone. “Why we feared its discovery. Why my ancestors hid it, and why your father… why he gave his life to keep it secret.”

The Warden nodded, his gaze fixed on the swirling vortex of pure power. It was beautiful, in a way that defied natural law. Shimmering, incandescent, it promised untold potential, but the scent of corruption hung heavy around it, a subtle, insidious poison. His father’s legacy was etched into the very fabric of this place, a ghostly whisper urging caution, demanding responsibility. He’d understood the contract: protect the settlement. He hadn’t understood the true nature of what he was protecting them *from*, or what they were unknowingly sitting upon.
