The air in the royal chambers had always been thick with the scent of sandalwood and unspoken anxieties, but now, a new, potent aroma had invaded the palace – the sharp, metallic tang of fear, laced with the intoxicating, unfamiliar perfume of the Djinn. Layla moved through the opulent halls like a ghost, her plain grey dress a stark contrast to the silks and jewels that adorned the fleeing courtiers. Her ordinary face, usually downcast in practiced humility, now held a flicker of something akin to bewildered terror. She had seen the Djinn, Karim, with her own eyes. Not from afar, as the others cowered, but up close, when he had found her polishing the Sultan’s discarded armor, his golden hair a halo against the shadowed stone, his yellow eyes burning with a predatory gleam as they fixed on her, and her alone.

He had swept into the palace like a storm, his laughter echoing through the vaulted ceilings, a sound that promised destruction and delighted in it. The Sultan and his retinue had scattered, their arrogance dissolving into whimpers. But Karim, this creature of myth and nightmare, had bypassed them, his gaze piercing through the terrified throng, landing with an unnerving steadiness on Layla. He had approached her, not with the usual disdain or indifference of the royals, but with a languid, possessive curiosity that made her heart hammer against her ribs.

“You,” he had breathed, his voice a silken caress that sent shivers down her spine. “The little mouse in the shadows.”
