Chapter 11
The Shadow's Grasp
The darkness intensifies, manifesting physically in Oakhaven. Shadows writhe, fear paralyzes the townsfolk, and the witches find their elemental strengths challenged by an unnatural force.
The air in Oakhaven had grown thick, heavy with a preternatural chill that had nothing to do with the Solstice's approach. It was a palpable dread, a suffocating blanket woven from the intensified darkness, and it clung to the cobblestones, seeped into the very mortar of the ancient buildings. Tonight, the shadows were not mere absences of light; they were entities, writhing and stretching with a life of their own, their tendrils reaching for anything that dared to gleam.
From the eaves of the old apothecary, where I, Morgana Meadowlight, kept my solitary vigil, I watched the town surrender to this encroaching gloom. The usual lamplight that spilled from windows, a warm invitation to hearth and home, now seemed to flicker weakly, struggling against the invasive dark. Fear, a cold and insidious serpent, coiled itself around the hearts of Oakhaven's inhabitants. I could feel it, a tremor running through the earth beneath my feet, a frantic pulse that mirrored the terror I sensed radiating from every darkened doorway.
My own affinity for light, the very essence that defined my magic, felt strained. It was as if the Crimson Moon, hanging like a malevolent eye in the inky sky, was actively draining the luminescence from the world, leaving only a hollow, echoing void. This was not the natural ebb and flow of night; this was an assault. An unnatural force was at play, twisting the very fabric of our reality, and it was challenging each of us, the witches of the coven, in ways we had never anticipated.
