Chapter 10

The Alpha's Gambit

The surviving werewolf Alpha resurfaces, a cunning predator who has been observing the chaos wrought by the Titans. He sees an opportunity to exploit the fractured secrecy and the immense power now stirring in the region. The Alpha targets Bear Claw, not just for sustenance, but to potentially gain favor with or harness the power of one of the awakening Titans, perhaps forming a dark alliance. He orchestrates a series of calculated attacks, aiming to sow further discord and draw the attention of the remaining supernatural protectors, setting a trap for JJ, Grizz, and Bishop.

The wind howled, a mournful dirge that clawed at the eaves of the cabin, each gust a spectral hand raking across the snow-laden pines. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the unspoken tension that had settled between JJ and Grizz like a second skin. The aftermath of the werewolf attack had left Bear Claw reeling, a ghost town haunted by the memory of ripped flesh and desperate howls. The fragile veil of secrecy, once a sturdy shield, now hung tattered and torn, revealing glimpses of a world that humanity was never meant to comprehend. And now, a new chill, older and deeper than the encroaching winter, was beginning to seep into the very bones of the land.

JJ traced the rim of her mug, the lukewarm coffee doing little to warm the unease that coiled in her gut. Grizz sat across from her, his massive frame a comforting, yet unnerving, presence. His human eyes, usually so keen and observant, held a distant, troubled look. The whispers had begun weeks ago, faint at first, like the rustle of dry leaves, but now they were a constant murmur in the wind, in the creak of the ancient trees, in the very groan of the earth beneath the ice. Whispers of nature itself, of primordial forces stirring from a slumber that had lasted millennia.

“They’re regrouping,” Grizz said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. He hadn't needed to specify who ‘they’ were. The surviving members of the werewolf pack, scattered and broken by the combined efforts of Grizz, Bishop, and the sheer, overwhelming terror of the Titans’ emergence, were now a shadow at the edges of their world. But this time, their resurgence felt different. It wasn’t just about survival or hunger. It was about opportunity.
