Chapter 6
Wings of Sapphire's Return
With Shadowfang defeated, Waffles earns his title. He finds a way home, forever changed by his adventure, a blue beacon of courage and a hero of two times.
The last echoes of Shadowfang’s pathetic whimper faded into the rustling leaves, leaving behind a silence that was both profound and utterly victorious. Waffles, still vibrating with the residual hum of sapphire power, blinked his large, bewildered eyes. The forest, once a canvas of fear under the fox’s reign, now shimmered with a newfound peace. Squirrels cautiously peeked from behind ancient oaks, their tiny noses twitching with relief. Rabbits, who had spent days huddled in their burrows, tentatively hopped into the sunlit glades. Even the normally stoic badgers grunted approximations of approval.
Professor Hoot, perched regally on a moss-covered branch, let out a low, resonant hoot. “Well done, young Waffles. Well done indeed.” His voice, usually a gentle murmur, carried a distinct note of pride.
Waffles puffed out his chest, a surprisingly athletic move for a creature so accustomed to waddling. He felt… different. Not just blue, though the sapphire glow still pulsed faintly beneath his downy feathers, but solid. The fear that had previously made his fluff stand on end was replaced by a steady, warm confidence. He looked down at his talons, which had once struggled to grip even a particularly slippery worm, now capable of digging trenches with a casual flex. He flexed them again, just to be sure. Yep, still got it.
