The slam of the front door echoed in the quiet house, a familiar sound that used to signal Leo’s return, a prelude to shared smiles and the comfortable weight of his presence beside her. Tonight, however, it was just another punctuation mark in the long, drawn-out sentence of Anya’s loneliness. She sat on the edge of their bed, the sheets cool and undisturbed on his side, a stark contrast to the warmth that used to radiate from him even in his sleep. The clock on the bedside table ticked with an almost mocking rhythm, each second a tiny hammer blow against her fraying nerves. He’d been late again, later than usual, his mumbled excuse about a “late client meeting” barely registering as he’d slipped out of the house, his familiar scent of sandalwood and something vaguely metallic already fading from the hallway.

Anya traced the worn pattern on the quilt, her fingers finding the familiar stitching that Leo had once admired. They had chosen it together, a symbol of the cozy, intertwined life they were building. Now, it felt like a relic of a different era, a time when “out” didn’t mean so much of an escape. She remembered the easy intimacy of their early years, the way his eyes would light up when he saw her, the way he’d pull her close, whispering promises of forever. Where had that Leo gone? Had the streets swallowed him whole, leaving behind only a phantom, a man who wore his absence like a second skin?

She’d tried to be understanding, truly she had. Leo’s work, he’d always said, was demanding. He was passionate about it, driven. But his passion had become a wall, and his drive had pulled him further and further away from her. The vague explanations, the hurried goodbyes, the late nights that bled into early mornings – it all added up to a chasm that seemed to widen with every passing day. She found herself staring at the front door for hours, a knot of anxiety tightening in her chest, her imagination painting vivid, unsettling scenarios. Was he in danger? Was he… with someone else? The whispers of doubt were insidious, growing louder in the suffocating silence of their home.
