The hum of the old engine was a low thrum against Anya’s racing heart. Darkness had swallowed the city whole, and the streetlights, usually a comforting constellation, now seemed like distant, indifferent stars. Each turn of the wheel, each flicker of a passing headlight, sent a fresh jolt of adrenaline through her. She gripped the steering wheel tighter, her knuckles white. This was it. She was actually doing it. Following Leo. The thought was both terrifying and exhilarating, a potent cocktail that had propelled her out of the silent house and into the unknown.

For weeks, a gnawing unease had settled in her stomach, a constant companion to the growing emptiness beside her in bed. Leo’s late nights, his vague pronouncements about “work,” the way he’d sometimes flinch when she asked for details – it all painted a picture far removed from the man she knew, the man who used to share every thought, every struggle, every triumph with her. The hushed phone calls, the quick glances over his shoulder, the faint scent of something unfamiliar, not quite cologne, clinging to his jacket – these were subtle cracks in the foundation of their shared life, widening with each passing day.

"It's just… a lot, Anya," he’d say, his voice strained. "Things I need to handle. It’s for us, you know? For our future." But his words felt like thin veils, barely concealing something significant, something he was unwilling, or unable, to share. And so, Anya’s imagination, a fertile ground for worry, had begun to sow seeds of doubt, each one sprouting into a thorny vine of suspicion. Was he in trouble? Was he seeing someone else? The questions clawed at her, stealing her sleep and her peace.
