Elara stood in the quiet of her small room, the weight of the Mirror of Truth’s absence settling heavier than any object ever could. The polished obsidian shard, a gift from the forest spirits themselves, usually rested on a velvet cushion in the Elder’s study, its surface a rippling pool that reflected not what was, but what should be. Now, only an indentation remained, a ghost of its presence. Elder Theron, his face a mask of bewildered concern, had called for an inquiry, his voice unwavering, but Elara had seen the flicker of something else in his eyes – a shadow that mirrored the emptiness on the pedestal.

The village buzzed with hushed accusations, a tangible tension weaving through the familiar cobblestone paths. Old Man Hemlock suspected the miller, whose flour sacks had been suspiciously light lately. Anya, the weaver, eyed the blacksmith’s son, a boy known for his restless hands and a penchant for mischief. Suspicion, like a creeping vine, choked the camaraderie that had once bound them. Elara, however, felt a different current pulling at her. The smudge on the Elder’s desk, dismissed by the others as mere dust, had felt strangely charged to her touch. And the spell-rune, fractured and dark, pulsed with a faint, unsettling energy that only she seemed to perceive.

Her training under Elder Theron had been a tapestry of ancient lore and practical wisdom. He was a man carved from the very foundations of their village, his pronouncements revered, his counsel sought by all. Yet, in the days since the mirror’s disappearance, a subtle shift had occurred. His pronouncements, once clear and resonant, now carried a faint tremor, his gaze occasionally darting away as if avoiding an unseen specter. Elara, with her apprentice’s keen eye, noticed these fissures in his otherwise unassailable facade.
