The Elder's Burden
Elara confronts Elder Theron, presenting her findings. He is initially defensive, clinging to his self-deception, but Elara's empathy and the evidence begin to chip away at his pride.
The air in Elder Theron’s private chamber felt heavier than usual, thick with unspoken words and the faint scent of dried herbs that had always clung to the room. Elara stood before the empty pedestal, the polished wood a stark reminder of what was missing. Her heart, usually a steady drumbeat of curiosity, thrummed with a nervous energy. She clutched the small, intricately carved wooden bird Silas had pressed into her hand, its wings still carrying a faint tremor of his fear.
Elder Theron sat behind his heavy oak desk, his face a landscape etched with age and, Elara now suspected, something more troubled. He looked up, his eyes, usually sharp and knowing, seemed clouded. "Elara, my child. You seem troubled. Have you found any further sign of the mirror?" His voice, though calm, held a brittle edge, like ice threatening to crack.
Elara took a deep breath, the scent of the herbs suddenly overwhelming. "Elder," she began, her voice softer than she intended. "I have been looking. And I… I found things." She walked towards the desk, placing the small wooden bird carefully on the polished surface. "Silas gave me this. He was in the chamber the night the mirror disappeared."
