Chapter 4
A Reflection of Lies
Elara discovers the mirror wasn't stolen but left. She learns Elder Theron has been deceiving himself, his internal dishonesty causing the mirror's departure. The spell-rune's magic confirms this.
The air in the Elder’s chamber, usually thick with the comforting scent of dried herbs and aged parchment, now felt thin and brittle, like a moth’s wing. Elara traced the faint, silvery outline where the Mirror of Truth had rested for as long as anyone could remember. The pedestal was bare, a stark white scar against the polished oak. She’d found it that way this morning, the heavy velvet curtain drawn, the silence deafening. Elder Theron, usually the first to greet the dawn with his measured pronouncements, had been nowhere to be found, his chambers locked from the inside.
Her fingers brushed against the smooth wood, a faint tingle sparking beneath her skin. It was the spell-rune, the one etched into the very base of the pedestal, designed to safeguard the mirror. She’d examined it yesterday, during the initial panic, and dismissed it as a minor scuff. But now, under the stark morning light, the damage was undeniable. A jagged line, like a lightning strike frozen in time, marred the intricate pattern. It wasn't just a scratch; it was a fracture, a break in the protective ward.
And then there was the fingerprint. A smudge, barely visible, on the velvet curtain that had hung beside the pedestal. It was too small for an adult’s thumb, too delicate for a child’s. She’d noticed it yesterday, a fleeting anomaly, but had dismissed it amidst the chaos. Now, it felt significant. A tiny, greasy question mark.
